Some people are born with a “gummy smile,”  or a smile that seems to be dominated by the tissue around their teeth.  With today’s dentistry, often this can be remedied through the use of a dental laser, a pen-like instrument that allows us to shape the tissue in a very ideal manner.  Much like drawing a picture on a piece of paper, this painless procedure eliminates excess gum tissue (which often follows orthodontic treatment), allowing the top part of the tooth to be seen – or in the case of bottom teeth, the lowest part of the tooth.  In some cases, this technique, in combination with teeth whitening, is all that has to be done to get rid of the ‘gummy smile.”  In some cases, the laser technique is used before the preparation and placement of porcelain veneers, resulting in a very natural and beautiful smile.
